About Artist Barbara Craig
  1. I spend a lot of time walking in the country and along the shore, every walk will contain an instance that permeates, the details evaporate and an impression of a significant moment from that day remains; the light, colours, patterns, the movement, a feeling will trigger my mind to hold onto that moment and distilled and edited it flows onto the page.
  2. The Process.
  3. I capture the basics in my mind's eye or as a very loose sketch, notating flashes of colour I've seen that I may wish to intensify, I put the energy of the elements into brushstrokes and mark making using acrylics, pastel, charcoal, inks.
  4. When the physicality of the act of painting takes over and the brain disengages it's wonderful, joyful, to me a planned picture is a wearisome thing. I thrive on spontaneity in applying media, impulsive and intuitive, a restraint of detail. Relinquishing control and painting without anxiety gives me great satisfaction.
  5. I want to produce work that is an expressive playground of colour, texture and movement for the viewers eyes and mind to dance around.
  6. The Intention.
  7. Our path on this land is not that profound, as with the weather and the seasons we come and then we are gone, it is but a sketchy memory. So I want to tread softly and try not to impose my will on the landscape. I attempt to keep it simple, be dramatic, have vitality and joy in the work.
