About Artist Carl Taylor
  1. Carl Taylor is a contemporary painter from Derry, N. Ireland. He has recently completed a Bachelor Degree in Fine and Applied Art. His most recent works from the Out of the Dark theme, were initially inspired by trips to The Marble Arch Caves in Co. Fermanagh where he studied, photographed and painted the stone and calcite formations. He is particularly interested in the play of light in the dark environment of caves, how different lighting affects the imagery we see, and also what the imagination conjures up. This is reflected in his paintings where he has exploited the natural forms of Stalactites, Stalagmites, Drip-stones and Flow-stones and created abstract images, some of which resemble prehistoric animals or cloaked figures emerging from the dark.
  2. Carl works mostly with a limited palette of earth colours, to capture and create the warm and cool tones of stone, calcite deposits, and the dark within the caves.
  3. Texture in his work is of particular importance; using a variety of techniques he paints with knives, brushes and various other tools to achieve this, sometimes with the paint alone, or using mixed media to achieve surface texture as in Calcite Cradle.
