About Artist Jason O'Ceannobhain

I have been painting and sketching from a very early childhood. I can't imagine a more interesting past-time other than painting. My artistic creations are an ideal method of expressing imaginative views through visual language and in my opinion, I believe that, with the proper use of colour and composition, there is no other vehicle more powerful of communicating at such an influential and subconscious level.
I try to get a photogenic persuasion with my work and my preferred medium is acrylic on canvas. I am fascinated by wildlife and it is my favourite subject to paint. I find that using the fast drying acrylic paint allows me to fall back onto the finer details of the piece, e.g. the texture of an animal's fur.
When I have chosen a theme, I begin by researching as much information as I can possibly find, via fieldwork photography, library and internet and when painting wildlife, I believe that it is essential to understand how the subject behaves in order to truly capture its flair. With the correct knowledge of the subject, composition and light, a painting can almost come to life.
Through my years in collage, I have tested many different mediums and have explored painting different personal interests of mine with much more looser techniques, however, I truly have a passion for painting 'realistic' art. It is an ever challenging method and merged with my fascination with wildlife, I believe it is the perfect medium for me. With this practice, I pick up new tricks and techniques with every painting.
Over the years and through my studies in collage, I have bounced from many different genres of painting.
My first exhibition was based on seascapes and over time I moved onto cityscapes and portraits. Although I admire still life and landscape paintings, the truth is that I could never really enjoy painting still life, no matter how much I tried. I love a painting that captures movement and this is probably why animals have such a strong influence over my work. I prefer to paint something that has a lot of energy in it. I want people to think that my subjects have their own conscience; as if they are about to move.
I intend to continue painting wildlife as I have so many different ideas that I wish to embark on. So far the vast majority of my animal studies are about African wildlife and living in Ireland limits the amount of research I can obtain, however, through my fieldwork research in the Irish surroundings, I began to play with the idea of an Irish wildlife exhibition. I am aware that we do not have the vast number of different animals as Africa, however our landscapes and native dwellers are just as inspiring. I have always enjoyed visiting different parts of Ireland but I never considered our countryside as a home for so many different species, furthermore, all the research I could possibly need is just outside my window. I began work on the Irish wildlife exhibition in 2011 and have continued with it since. The idea is to visually show people things that they never knew where happening in their own back-garden. A squirrel as it prepares for the coming winter or two royal red s tag's fighting for dominance. I have now discovered that the vast untouched land of our Irish landscape provides home to some of the worlds most extraordinary wild animals.
