  About John Hanrahan

John Hanrahan Artist based in Clare working in a variety of media.

In my art practice landscape is a significant motif. Landscapes provide a framework for images that I have instinctively chosen from my experience and memory. I try to make work which is not so much about place as time, images filtered according to my own personal recollection. We all create our own interpretation when we look and this can over time become more real than the place itself.

In my more recent body of work, which is a series of mixed media and paintings on board, I have explored this further and applied it to interior scenes. I have created a series of personal recollections that explore the relationships between the space and the subjects, using images discovered in old family photographs and recreating memory through the filter of time and family connection.

In painting, I am attracted to the constant interaction between ideas and marks. I use layers of paint on board adding, sanding back, removing the paint for some areas and varnishing to protect other areas to create a history, a memory.
