About Artist Lora Murphy
  1. Lora Murphy is a mainly self taught painter working in the traditional oil painting medium and also in the ancient medium of encaustic.
  2. Encaustic ,from the old greek enkaustikos, means to heat or to burn. The medium consists of wax melted with a little damar resin. Pigment is added to the molten wax and it becomes paint. Heat is used at every stage of the painting process and is applied between layers of brushstrokes fusing the layers together. The result is a luminosity beyond measure a sensuous tactile feast for the eyes.
  3. Lora has been inspired by the portrais from Fayum in Egypt. These fascinating portraits are the most ancient easel paintings to have survived having been executed some 2000 years ago. At least 1000 exist. They were executed in wax and retain their impact and originality and often exquisite beauty and are a source of constant inspiration and wonder..
  4. Lora's work is held in collections in Ireland, Scandinavia, Germany, USA, The Middle East and Australia.
  5. Lora is currently studying at a traditional atelier in Florence, Italy
  6. Artists statement:
My work is concerned with the idea of interconnectness. The deeply held conviction that we are all connected to each other and to the earth. The idea of unity belonging being returning fusing
