About Artist Pat Gillen
  1. Ever since a child, I always loved to make drawings of our farm animals, the out-buildings, the pikes of hay in the haggard and so on. I also liked to cut out shapes in cardboard and try to make them stand freely on their own.
  2. This childhood passtime seems to have evolved into the painter / sculptor that I am today.
  3. Over time, my art has become very diverse in its nature. Drawing on the physical world around me and combining this with my most inner thoughts and interpretations. I find inspiration in almost everything, the landscape, nature, manmade objects, buildings, cultures and by-gone ways as well as old myths and ledgends.
  4. I take a sketchpad with me everywhere I go and make numerous drawings. At other times I draw and design ideas that are in my head. Sometimes more than one idea or design might be developed into the same painting or sculpture.
  5. I didn't set out to become so diverse in my art. However, I am glad that this is so because it gives me great freedom of imagination through which I can transform my ideas and concepts into a physical entity. Even though I like my work to be pleasing to the eye, I dont deliberately set out to make a pretty picture to decorate the wall or an ornamental sculpture for the mantelpiece. Rather my work is concerned with aspects such as light, mood, movement, space, form etc. Largely self tought, I find I am continuously learning new methods and approches to develop my art, and so, with every project I try to bring out the ultimate artwork from deep inside my soul. Perhaps each work is just that. However, every project is an investigative and expermintal process in which I am always searching for somthing new. And this ultimate artwork is probably a pursuit that will occupy me for all of my life.
  6. The purpose of my art is twofold. First of all it satisfies my own inquisitive and creative nature, but it is also meant to be a celebration of the world of which I am part bringing a feeling of exhilaration for the viewer to enjoy. I like to think of my art as something which can speak for itself and does not need verbal explaination. Hopefully it can be easily appreciated and understood where the viewer has the oppertunity to ponder and determine their own interpretation of it.
