About Artist Pat McGrath
  1. A week spent in the Cill Rialaig artist's retreat in County Kerry some years ago convinced me that I'm an urban artist. All that nature and the lack of sirens breaking the silence every ten minutes sent me home early to the redbrick, glass and concrete of Dublin.
  2. What excites me is the detritus of City Life - the evidence that we are here. History interests me, what sticks and what fades away, the names and experiences that we remember and the ones that we forget. Old photos of people that we can't put a name to, names that we can't put a face to graffitied into long set concrete, found objects that were once in everyday use but have now lost their meaning, all tell a story. There is always a gap between the story we tell from them and their real history.
  3. My work allows me to reflect and examine the experience of city life using oil paint, stuff I find on the studio floor and bits and pieces I find while walking the city streets to recreate the texture, contrast and humour of the urban landscape.
