About Artist Stephen Shaw
  1. I paint the ever changing face of Belfast and other places in Northern Ireland. Not Tourist Attractions and well known landmarks, but the ordinary, the neglected and what could be perceived as 'mundane'. Feeling it's vital to experience and record what is happening to the City almost daily before our eyes.
  2. I find inspiration and beauty in places and features that are normally ignored. A mysterious window, a blocked or closed door, an empty shop or pub, an abandoned house or small business.
  3. All once lived in or enjoyed by the people of the City, but now left to decay, vanish, or be replaced by 'regeneration'.
  4. Although important elements, this is not merely an exercise in nostalgia or historic documentation, but also hopefully a new way of looking at 'everyday' places.
  5. A subject has to draw itself to me emotionally before I consider painting it. I may not know the story behind a particulat facade, but often feel a sense that there is one. These stories may reveal themselves in time? The painting is never merely copied from photographs, but takes on its own life. Transforming into almost abstract composition, the colours and textures of the subject, creating something new and challenging from the familiar.
  6. I use watercolour as my media, but not in its traditional style. I aim for something more unique in both my subject and method of painting. A self-tought technique that is totally my own. Highly detailed, but not photographic. Meticulous and accurate, but expressive.
