Karl Thomas Art (Download The Catalogue)

Art is everything. I was painting before I could speak. I'm a PhD student in art at Trinity College Dublin and I divide my time between Dublin and Leitrim. I paint the way I think and dream, it's all equally spontaneous and revealing.

I am an artist who believes passionately in the universality and inclusivity of Abstract Art. My work often reduces figuration to biomorphic and geometric elements, desiring to elicit a response from the viewer's unconscious. The aesthetic elements of my work are based in ephemera and the derelict object. The various paint types used aim to achieve a variety of finishes, from aging paint work and weathered walls to smooth Cycladic figurines and cave paintings. This bases aspects of the work in the real world using a considered degree of 'Primitivism'. The juxtaposition of scales and colours of forms creates visual activity and the applications of paints inform the compositions with drama and intensity. I have no intention of dictating the meaning of my work and welcomes the viewer's interpretations. I view the work as my personal 'mosaic of influence', notable in the naming of the work which tackles everything from Classical Mythology, to Beat Literature, to song lyrics, to dreams. The mobility of the work is influenced by the rhythm of lines in books, irregular beats, noise, smooth curvilinear sounds and conversation. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Karl.Artist.Poet.Mystic
